SIR – Through no fault of their own, thousands have been made redundant because of the recession. Yet Christine Culley advocates they, not the army, should have been deployed clearing the snow (Letters, January 13).

Seemingly, the lady is unaware that the military is a volunteer force paid to help out in any emergency. It’s not all about bombs and bullets.

Instead of treating the unemployed as second-class citizens, it would be more pragmatic to engage those on community service, should there be a need.
