The Bradford & Bingley’s former headquarters has always drawn a mixed reaction, as evidenced by our feature on this page.

Whether you have agreed that it was a carbuncle or thought the trailing greenery lent it a Hanging Gardens of Babylon appeal, the structure has become famous, or notorious, depending on your point of view.

With no-one yet coming forward with the money to meet the £4 million price tag on the building with a view to tackling the problems inside and retaining the structure, it now seems inevitable that it will be demolished by whoever takes it on.

The suggestion that it could well become a supermarket might not appeal to some, but it is perhaps a viable option.

A supermarket would have the benefit of bringing more people into Bingley – providing the parking arrangements were satisfactory – which would hopefully have a positive knock-on effect on other business in the town.

It would also provide those who shop in Bingley with more choice, and might allay the fears of those who are worried that plans for another supermarket on the nearby auction mart site could take business away from Main Street.

Whatever is decided, the site must become something positive, and not just a void in the centre of Bingley.
