SIR – I am surprised at Mr Bird’s scepticism regarding the correlation between having no insurance and being 12 times more likely to have an accident (Letters, October 16). One only has to look at the court reports regularly published in the T&A to see that in very many cases having no insurance is coupled with having no driving licence and no MOT. This suggests that often those who have no insurance have not passed a driving test and may well be in a vehicle that is not fit to be on the road. Unlike Mr Bird, I believe the statistics and welcome any moves to remove such “drivers” from the road. Pamela Smith, Chatsworth Fall, Pudsey
