SIR – In recent months a number of correspondents have been quick to denounce American ‘atrocities’ in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan using unmanned air-flying drone attacks. One reader, Ms Mubarik Iqbal, even accused the Americans of having an insatiable appetite to kill innocent people (Letters, July 22).
According to media reports, around 180 Pakistanis have died at the hands of the Taliban in the past two weeks, including many innocent women and children. Forty died in suicide bomb attacks in Lahore alone (T&A, October 16). The leader of this terrorist onslaught, Hakimullah Mehsud, has said he will cease his bloody terrorist campaign if the Pakistani government breaks from the Americans and allows the creation of a Taliban-style Islamic state. Meshud chillingly adds that his forces will then be free to wage war on India.
Those who are quick to condemn the US should ponder the aims of Mehsud before they condemn others.
