SIR – Our Council seems to do very little of what the city’s people want and a great deal of what they do not want. A typical example is in the Toller Lane-Duckworth Lane area, and has caused semi-permanent gridlock on Duckworth Lane as far as Little Lane.

It was essential to do something about the traffic on Little Lane because of the large number of articulated lorries using it as a cut-through to/from Toller Lane as well as the cars parked on both sides.

So it was made one-way – a solution almost guaranteed to produce congestion on Duckworth Lane. Yet enforcement of unilateral parking would almost certainly have solved most of the problem.

The Council went on to make more mistakes, spending enormous amounts restricting access to Duckworth Grove and Duckworth Terrace.

Then, noting only Duckworth Grove was wide enough to permit bilateral parking and free passage for two lanes of traffic, made it one-way in the wrong direction – uphill – restricting access to BRI from Smith Lane to the very narrow, bilaterally parked Duckworth Terrace, now one-way downhill.

Finally, to crown this mess, plastic road bumps were put in on the now very busy, speed-impossible Little Lane and Duckworth Terrace! Ian R McDougall, Hawkswood Avenue, Heaton
