SIR – Last week the Irish voted “no” to the Lisbon Treaty, and in the T&A (June 17) Michael Martin, the Irish Foreign Minister, claims that even the Irish “no” voters were pro-Europe.

At what point will politicians stand up and take note of what the people are saying?

The French and Dutch voted “no” a few years ago, yet the EU juggernaut continues unabated, wasting billions of euros in the process.

Regrettably, no-one on the EU gravy train will vote against the EU, and at a time when most families are feeling the financial strain after 11 years of Labour’s financial incompetence, it is reassuring to know expenses will not be compromised for all our elected representatives.

What we, the public, consider disgraceful in terms of expenses in Euroland, is considered a part of the package.

Before the usual suspects write in to say I am anti-Europe, I can categorically say that I am not, and close co-operation with the rest of Europe is the best way forward.

I am anti-EU and there is a huge difference.
