SIR – I am happy to point Mr Goldsbrough towards the leading scientific findings on climate change so that he can fulfil his promise to accept that he is wrong “when the proof presents itself” (Letters, June 16).

The Fourth Assessment Report of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was published in November, 2007, a month before the IPCC won the Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts to raise awareness of “man-made climate change.” The report is easy to find online.

IPCC scientists conclude that “global increases in CO2 concentrations are due primarily to fossil fuel use”, and that “most of the observed increase in global average temperatures since the mid-20th century is very likely due to the observed increase in anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions.”

The IPCC warns that the ongoing failure to cut our carbon emissions presents huge risks, including contractions in snow cover and arctic sea ice, retreating glaciers, more heatwaves and wildfires, water shortages in semi-arid areas, lower crop productivity, worse tropical storms, more flash flooding and coastal flooding, rising sea levels that will inundate low-lying coastal areas worldwide, and species loss.

How much more evidence does anyone need?
