SIR – The resignation of David Davis to fight a by-election on the issue of civil liberties shows that there is at least one Tory who really does share Liberal Democrat long-held concerns about the erosion of our human rights.
The building up of a DNA database, including samples from thousands of children, the removal of the right to jury trial in some situations, and the extension of detention without charge should ring alarm bells loud enough.
The vastly expensive ID card will affect everyone, with the potential for a hackers’ paradise, leading to fraud and blackmail, even if someone does not leave the national database on a train by mistake.
