SIR - All too often, we hear of indifferent service from government departments, but only this past week, the handling of an underpayment in my pension credit by the Pension Service proved to be spot on.

I rang them, explaining the problem, at 1.30pm on Monday. They were most helpful, and a cheque arrived, in the post, at 12.15pm the following day, less than 24 hours after phoning.

Beat that for service!
