SIR - Ruth Wood (T&A, November 22) may be interested to know the humps she refers to are probably illegal.

Traffic Advisory Leaflet 07/96 recommends a minimum traverse gap of 750mm for the safe passage of cyclists. This is the gap between the edge of the hump and the kerb face.

The humps installed on Common Road and Abb Scott Lane fall well below this recommendation, down to less than 300mm in places, and are a danger to cyclists due to the driver desire line. Drivers tend to straddle the cushions and if you watch traffic driving up and down these roads they are weaving all over the place.

While traffic-calming is a necessary evil, the least Bradford Council could do is install humps to the correct standards.

I complained via my councillor about this when they started to install the cushions but they carried on and installed the remainder of the cushions incorrectly.

Regardless of the cost, they should be replaced, but once again the council tax payer will be footing the bill for this error and the Council will run out the same excuses.

In the meantime I hope no cyclist or motorcyclist comes to harm as a result of this scheme.
