SIR - Jim Greenhalf's Saturday Essay "The high price democracy has had to pay" (T&A, November 17) is the most realistic and truthful article I have read for a long time.
We are certainly over-governed and could get rid of 500 MPs tomorrow.
If they can spend 700 hours discussing issues like fox hunting they are obviously looking around for something to fill up their time with. New legislation coming from Brussels is merely rubber stamped.
They are not likely to vote themselves out of these wonderful well-paid and superannuated jobs though, so how are we to get rid of them?
They are voted in on manifestos they have no intention of sticking to.
It is time democracy was reintroduced to this country by having fewer MPs and more referendums.
