SIR - What on earth is that twisted mass of metal that has been plonked on the roof of Lister's Mill?

It has nothing in common with the new penthouse level, defacing the once-noble roofline of the neighbouring wing, so I must assume it shares the "sculptural" nature of those cyclopean red steel goalposts that stick out of what used to be the quadrangle.

While I deplore the commercial decision to add the penthouse level, I understand it.

I can understand the need for Bradford Council and even English Heritage to reach a compromise with the developers in order to save one of the finest and magnificent examples of Victorian industrial architecture from terminal decay and/or arson.

What I cannot understand is the demotion of Lister's Mill to a backdrop and plinth for lumps of corporate art as part of this deal, if that is what the "goalposts" and "thing" are).

Regardless, they seem to have taken priority over the restoration of the dismantled turret.

Maybe these ghastly additions to the mill are temporary. Or maybe this tasteless "branding" by its new master is the permanent Faustian price of its survival.
