SIR - The new film, 1917, directed by Sam Mendes with a plot based partly on the memories of his grandfather, is being much-hyped at the moment and has already been earmarked for film award success.

Yet, after seeing it, I would say it fully deserves all the praise it has been getting. If you are interested in this period of history or gaining a better understanding of the nature of war, this movie gives what certainly feels like a very truthful account of some events which took place in the trenches and beyond, in the penultimate year of World War One.

Strong on telling its story thoughtfully but not gratuitously or glamorously, it leaves a lasting, affecting impression.
