SIR - I was fascinated to read about the High Royds Cemetery (T&A, October 29).

This has been a matter of great concern to me for many years, especially since the closure of the hospital and redevelopment of the estate.

Having lived within a stone's throw of it for more than 50 years, I have watched the chapel gradually deteriorate and the grass grow ever longer.

While the hospital was in operation, the grass was mown from time to time, but what happens now I have no idea.

However, the matter that concerns me the most is the disrespect shown to those resting therein by the local dog walkers who seem to think it's a good idea to allow their dogs free rein. No matter that the gate and only lawful access is padlocked.

Access is being gained through the hedge bordering Buckle Lane and the lower boundary of the cemetery.

I would like to see this appalling practice stopped. There are plenty of places equally close to the houses where canine activities of this nature can be carried out without let or hindrance.

Why should it take place in a cemetery?
