SIR - Bradford Council has approved outline plans for a retail development, possibly comprising three sizeable retail units and a drive-thru cafe, on the outskirts of Shipley at the old Cardinal industrial site (T&A, December 17).

Now this is all very well, but it is surely a massive cause for concern. Town centres are struggling at the moment, including Shipley, so why on earth does the Council consider it acceptable to approve such an out-of-town development?

LETTER OF THE DAY: 'She's not the PM... she's a very naughty girl!'

With its own parking it will no doubt simply draw some trade from Shipley town centre, something it can ill afford.

On the face of it this would appear to be yet another ill thought out decision by our Labour Council.
