SIR - Your report that one-in-four pubs have closed over the past ten years in the UK (T&A, Nov 26) doesn't surprise me.

For a pub to survive nowadays they need to sell good food as well as drink and be a comfortable meeting place.

There are many that fit this criteria but the days of the old spit and slaver pub are over.
