SIR - Recent correspondence has, in my view, quite rightly expressed concern at the continuing apparent punishment in courts being incompatible with the "crime", ie community service, jail terms only half served, continuous reoffending allowed.
This despite statements from the judiciary that a zero tolerance approach was to be applied especially to those not obeying police orders to stop whilst driving illegally.
Last week the worst nightmare for law abiding drivers occurred in Sheffield. An innocent group of people wiped out by a car being driven at speed in a dangerous and reckless manner. This could happen to anyone anywhere at an time, as this crime is clearly out of control. How much more are the judiciary going to allow the perpetrators to get away with before they are brought down to earth by hard hitting retribution?
