SIR - With the Brexit deadline looming, we are now beginning to see the truth about the outcome of this decision to ''go it alone'' as a trading nation.

The Tory party loudly claim that they are carrying out their election manifesto promise to leave the EU (and the will of the people).

When this is finally achieved it will probably be the first time since being elected into government that they have not gone back on their election manifesto promises to date.

I think we all know that this is far more than sticking to any kind of promise but merely a ready made excuse for the fact that their policy of austerity is failing and our economy is about to hit an all time low in growth and investment.

They can then blame it all on ''the people'' for voting for Brexit.
