SIR - Mr Hitchcock’s response to my letter, re the appalling employment record of Labour, reminds me of a kid at school being caught red handed: “Wasn’t me miss.”

Labour's record on the economy is as bad. 1931 saw the collapse of Britain’s second Labour party due to mismanagement of the economy such that then prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald resigned allowing a Conservative-led national party to take over. Move forward to 1974. Callaghan’s Labour government was a shambles. Our winter of discontent. We couldn’t even bury our dead and he had to go cap in hand to the IMF for a loan of £2.3 billion. This was reported as a humiliation for a former imperial power. Fast forward to the last Labour government. Under Blair and Brown they bankrupted the country, remember the letter left in a draw by the chief secretary Liam Byrne? “There is no money.” God forbid Corbynista was successful in his campaign. We would end up like Venezuela with his Marxist policies.
