SIR - For as long as I can recall, Theresa May and the other Brexiteers have been busy putting all of Britain's precious post-Brexit eggs into a basket labelled 'Trade deal with the USA'. This has then been held aloft as a promised salvation to all our future fears.

Surely this charade cannot now continue in the wake of Trump's landmine-strewn visit to the UK? The capricious US President went out of his way to undermine and denigrate Theresa May, contradict himself on the feasbility of any trade deal and attack international institutions, betraying an utter ignorance of their value and the roles they play in maintaining world peace and order. His post-Helsinki volte-face only adds further weight to the case.

While here he showcased his characteristic boorishness, contempt and a complete inability to grasp the finer points of any topic before topping this all off in his interview in The Sun torpedoing the Brexiteers' last glittering hope of a trade deal deliverance from the impending disaster.

Anyone placing their withering hopes in the hands of the volatile President Trump is foolhardy indeed.
