SIR - What a tonic it was to see your feature on the dastardly slimy B'Stard (aka Rick Mayall) (T&A, June 13).

It's always encouraging to lampoon the politicians who, like spots, tend to get worse as you pick them.

The tradition goes back from the wonderful Yes Minster programmes to Hogarth's 18th century cartoons and perhaps beyond.

But my favourite quip is that of George Burns who mused on the question: "How come all the guys who should be running the country are either cutting hair or driving taxis?"
