SIR – In response to Geoffrey Holmes(Letters, February 24) I didn’t say that Ralph Miliband wasn’t a Marxist, I said his son Ed wasn’t and that many of us have different political views to our parents.
I knew Ralph Miliband and not only did he work as a plumber, he served in the Royal Navy and worked as a removal man during the second world war.
Ralph wasn’t a member of any political organisation and hated dogma.
Yes he went to the London School of Economics, so what?
I failed my 11 plus at school and started work at the age of 15 but I don’t begrudge anyone a decent education or good standard of living, that’s why I’m a socialist.
Ralph Miliband had numerous friends from different backgrounds with different opinions and it would be a sad day indeed if the only friends we had in the world were those who agreed with us on every dot and comma.
