SIR – It is significant that the plea for better road safety (September 18) was from a bus driver. Buses are as safe as trains, and ten times safer than cars.
This is despite the massive size of a bus. Bus drivers are given a very high level of training and almost all buses now have CCTV recording and a black box monitor of the driving standard.
All drivers could be trained to drive to this standard and all vehicles could have black box recorders.
Safely-driven vehicles cost less to insure, use less fuel and therefore cause less pollution.
Companies would be more profitable if their drivers were as safe as bus drivers.
Everyone benefits and it is unacceptable that the police and the council allow Bradford’s roads to be so unsafe.
