SIR - When Arthur Waterhouse (T&A, January 17) suggests Bradford College uses the coat of arms of the local authority he is evidently not aware that the college has its own coat of arms which it has used successfully for many years.

The arms were officially granted by the College of Arms in London and were so widely used by the college that it won the International Corporate Heraldry Award of The Heraldry Society.

As a former student, lecturer and governor of the college I am appalled that an attractive coat of arms has been abandoned to be replaced by a quite revolting logo.

The device can surely do nothing to improve the image of the college, and the fact that an obscene amount of money has been spent on it reflects unfavourably on its management.

David M Krause, Corrance Road, Wyke l SIR - If Councillor Matt Palmer (Con, Wharfedale) had not used the Freedom of Information Act to uncover the cost of the new logo for Bradford College (T&A, January 13) would the public at large have ever been enlightened?

Principal Michele Sutton's support of the Big B' does not justify the spending of £200,000 on what Coun Palmer calls "a glow-in-the-dark green B that most designers would have a hard time charging £5 for".

I suspect that to ensure their budget was not cut for the following year they had to spend every penny of their current allowance.

However, what concerns me more is the reticence of the 25,000 students who never seem to question any decision made by their superiors.

How often do you see a letter to the Editor penned by a student? Are they by nature apathetic or is the sword of Damocles suspended over their heads?
