Credit where it's due, as the saying goes, and there can be fewer more deserving recipients than those who scoop the annual Community Harmony awards in Bradford.

These aren't gongs that go to members of the mutual appreciation society or the great and the good; they are the awards that recognise the unsung heroes of the district.

Specifically, they are given out to those ordinary citizens who try to make life better and smoother right at grassroots level in the area.

The people honoured in the Community Harmony scheme do not do what they do for money or reward. They do it out of real community spirit and a desire to ensure that we all rub along together as best we can.

As Mohammed Ayyaz of Bradford Council's equality service says, if these awards didn't exist then many people would simply not know about the good work done by so many tireless residents of the district.

So if you've been impressed by the quiet dedication of someone who lives near you, or have thought an idea being carried out in a local community or health centre is a really good one, then now's your chance to speak up about it.

Between now and the closing date of March, it's hoped that many of Bradford's unsung heroes will be getting nominated for a Community Harmony award.

Make sure that whoever's making a difference in your community doesn't miss out.
