Regarding how the EU Parliament works - quite simply it doesn't.

The members have so much legislation placed in front of them daily that it simply has no time to debate it; they are simply told to vote in favour and even if they don't it still gets implemented.

And as to people not fighting wars, well we really would have a United Europe then wouldn't we, united under Hitler's heirs.

But that is an interesting point on its own, seeing as the term "European Economic Community" was first conceived by Hermann Goering in 1942.
