SIR – Here we go again, DS Boyes telling half a tale. (Letters, July 15).

The truth is that the Labour government took over the Tories’ mess in 1974. Inflation in double figures, three-day week, power black-outs, TV off air at 10.30pm.

Cost of living allowances first at £2.50 then £1.50 then 50p every time inflation went up 1%. Then what happened, the oil prices trebled and inflation across Europe was on average 27%.

What Labour did was freeze wages for three years, turn the economy around and got inflation back into single digits, turned balance of trade figures back into the black, paid back all the IMF loans and got unemployment falling. It was too high, but falling.

What the unions wanted for the the British work force of all levels was a reward for their contribution in turning the economy around through their sacrifices.

I too am old enough to remember, but I remember both sides and not what suits.
