Plans to turn the empty Pavilion building on Bradford's City Park are to be applauded - and it is to be hoped they are a success and pave the way for yet more eating establishments in the city centre.

This is a direct result of the Taste of Bradford event organised by advocacy group Bradford Breakthrough, which is on a mission to attract more restaurants into Bradford.

It is a highly laudable initiative. We can see the signs of regeneration all around in the city centre - the City Park and Mirror Pool, of course, have proved hugely successful, especially in the warm weather.

And the cranes are busy on the Westfield site, which is progressing markedly every single day towards its planned opening date late next year.

A city centre needs people to thrive, and shopping is certainly one of the major ways to bring them in. But alongside that, people must be encouraged to stay longer in the city centre, and an attractive food offering is one of the major ways to do that.

We have already seen moves by the police to crack down on problem drinkers in the city centre this week, and that is a crucial part of the jigsaw.

Visitors to the city, whether for shopping, food or tourism, must feel safe and secure at all times, otherwise they simply will not come back, especially as family groups.

Joined up thinking by the retail community, the food and drink establishments, the police and public transport and parking is needed to create a perfect package which will be irresistible to people and create a lively and enjoyable city centre experience.
