SIR - Over the Christmas period my wife had a heart attack. I called the paramedics and a young lady arrived, weighed down with equipment.

Within minutes she treated her patient and calmed her down, it was wonderful to watch her work, as she assessed the situation and called the ambulance.

My appreciation grew until I asked if she was all right. She told me she was apprehensive about doing her job in the dark nights.

When a doctor is called out at night I see him arrive with a male driver for speed and protection.

Surely paramedics should have the same peace of mind in this sinister world of ours?
