SIR - Your front page article (T&A, January 6) about the brutal and premeditated attack on a taxi driver, though shocking, didn't surprise me.

It shows what happens when the punishment does not fit the crime. Too often people commit horrible crimes such as this and the sentence handed down is paltry, to say the least.

The attack on Abid Fazal was premeditated according to the article, and an iron bar was used. Any one of the blows to Mr Fazal could have proved fatal.

To that end I would suggest that a charge of attempted murder should be brought should the perpetrators be caught.

On that point, somebody knows who these people are, they knew the area well enough which suggests they are local. So do the right thing and pass the information to the police.
