SIR - In the 15 years that I have lived at my property, Council workmen have never once gritted the road.

When this has been questioned the residents were informed that the gritting of a minor road was not justified, a decision which we have accepted and simply have to live with.

However, the council workmen did visit the residents of Radfield Drive recently with the cleaning of the road by the street-sweeping team. This was not a job that was really necessary especially when they carried out the work at 9.15am on Sunday morning, Christmas Eve.

While the Council cannot justify gritting the road in the winter how can they justify sweeping the side roads on a Sunday morning and on Christmas Eve?

Could it be that a minimum of double time and maybe even additional time off in lieu was the justification?
