SIR -The police intend to clamp down on motorised' law-breaking in the city centre (T&A, January 29).

Perhaps readers need clarification on what type of law-breaking the police are keen to nullify.

As far as I can deduce there appears to be no policing of the city centre. Cars go where they wish without restriction, eg bus lanes.

Illegal left turns are made from the Interchange into Bridge Street and from Bridge Street into Hall Ings.

Drivers illegally enter both ends of Market Street and make illegal right turns from Hall Ings into Broadway.

I do not blame the copper on the street as they merely follow orders from above, but it is time to stop making positive noises and for senior officers to wake up and actually enforce the law.

When Rudolph Giuliani took on a zero tolerance mission in New York, he fully backed it up in both bloody-mindedness and finance.

We've slipped too far down the lenient route, especially in wardens with no power.

If police chiefs were honest in knowing how far things have slipped they would see how they cannot back up words with actions.
