SIR - For someone with Coun Cooke's record, to preach the virtues of "debate, discussion and argument" (T&A, November 27) takes some audacity.

Could this be the same Coun Cooke who has twice been demoted and only recently rapped across the knuckles by the Standards Board for his appalling conduct?

If he believes so strongly in free debate, let him prevail upon his colleague the Tory Chief Whip to cease curtailing debate by rushing our motions straight to the vote (a foregone conclusion) under section 19 of the Constitution.
