SIR - I see the issue of fluoridation is once again rearing its head with the Primary Care Trust bidding to medicate us all with this chemical rather than concentrate on providing proper dental care to those who need it most.

Tooth decay is not caused by there being no fluoride in the water; it is caused by poor diet and poor dental hygiene, neither of which would be cured by their proposals.

Before taking this any further the PCT should think what action it would take against one of its own doctors if it was found that he or she had prescribed a drug to a patient without either meeting or examining him and without determining whether the patient had any of the problems the drug was supposed to cure.

If the doctor had prescribed the drug for life, with no maximum dosage advice, telling the patient take as much of it as you like, and just for good measure we will give it to your family and neighbours as well,' it is likely the doctor would, quite rightly, be struck off.
