SIR – Ian Lyons, of Baildon Lib-Dems, is trying to mislead people by claiming Conservative councillors “dismissed” a petition calling for action at the Green Lane/Otley Road junction. I am chairman of the Shipley Area Committee and this matter was discussed for about an hour with various sensible suggestions put forward by members to possibly improve the junction. We were in no doubt that a large number of people feel something should be done because there are clearly issues at the junction and huge tailbacks occur when there is an incident.

However, to install traffic lights would cost approximately £750,000. Given that the Area Committee’s road traffic schemes budget is £154,700 for 2013/14, to be shared throughout the whole of the Shipley constituency, we clearly do not have the resources to fund such large works!

As improvements would need to be considered as a major capital scheme, the committee resolved to send the matter to the Council’s executive body which was the only positive option available to us given these circumstances – we actually did the opposite of "dismissing" it.
