SIR – As the Conservative spokesman on Bradford Council for Children’s Services, I found the Council meeting last week was one of those rare occasions which reminded me how rewarding politics can be.

I was gratified my motion calling on the Council to identify the young carers in the district and provide whatever assistance we can for them was carried unanimously. It was pleasant to see all the parties put their differences aside and vote the proposal through without argument.

Young carers are brave and virtuous and they do what they do out of love and a sense of duty. They save the state a fortune, as many of the people they care for would otherwise be in residential care or in receipt of expensive care packages.

It is wrong to allow them to soldier on without support and it is imperative the sentiments expressed in the motion are translated into action without delay.

Bradford has a proud history of caring for the young and reforming education, so it would be a pity to fail to live up to that history.

I hope that we see the issue treated with urgency and look forward to hearing how we can provide help to people who are truly deserving of our gratitude and support.
