SIR – On Sunday, July 7, I was taken by some of my family to the wartime show at Hunsworth. What a spectacular day. To Stuart Wright and all who help to arrange this attraction, I for one thank them for a marvellous day, as I am sure many more will agree.
The enactments operations were very special. Near where we were, some elderly people were watching and suddenly a steward came to one of the gentlemen and took him to sit on one of the jeeps. It was announced this gentleman was a veteran of the Second World War. He was 93 years old. He was driven round the show as he couldn’t walk far.
I was a young child during the war and didn’t realise what sacrifices the armed forces had made until we learned at school of the atrocities our forces faced.
There were other veterans, some with tears in their eyes and I’m sure there were forces from the war raging now. They had amputees of arms and legs. Our soldiers should never be forgotten and David Cameron enjoyed his day at tennis but my day on Sunday is something I will never forget.
