SIR – Vanda Greenwood (Letters, July 9) has stopped accusing Lib-Dems of being “in coalition” with Tories on Council “for ten years”. Now, Lib-Dems “propped-up” Tory-run councils!

Well, we voted with Tories on Council where sensible to do so – as did Labour. Labour even voted with Tories at least once to scupper Lib-Dem proposals. Was Labour in coalition with the Tories, or merely propping them up? Clearly we were not!

I've not attempted to give lessons in spending, merely in telling the truth, so I’m puzzled by Vanda’s new accusations.

Labour have found “fat” to be cut from Council spending and Lib-Dems are slated for not calling for cuts sooner. Coalition Government-inspired cuts are nowhere near as bad as Labour squealed about!

Councillor Greenwood once told me that she and ordinary Labour councillors had little input into budget setting.

The Lib-Dem leadership encouraged all in our smaller group to input into alternative budget proposals. We did propose cuts in some areas, if not overall, though as power rested with either Labour or Tories, our suggestions were not necessarily taken up!
