The High Court's ruling backing the fight by campaigners to stop 2.5 million tonnes of rubbish being dumped into a quarry near their homes is testament to the sheer will and determination of a Bradford community.

The victory for Denholme villagers against plans to dump waste at Buck Park quarry is a victory for people power'. The shadow of what might happen at Buck Park quarry has been hanging over the people of Denholme since permission for quarrying there was first granted in 1992.

But it is during the last five years that villagers have had to fight against something which they firmly believed would be detrimental to their homes, their community and the environment.

It is hard for those who have not been involved in this campaign to imagine the elation which Ann Anderson and her fellow campaigners must be feeling today following a ruling by Mr Justice Crane that any dumping of rubbish at the site would have an adverse impact on trees and shrubs.

But it is likely that very many people will understand why the 3,000-strong community did not want the waste dump - which would have been just 15 metres from the closest house - on their doorstep. And it is also to be hoped that other communities and campaigners take heed from what the people in Denholme have achieved.

They were said in court to be like Rottweilers' in their campaign against the dump and their victory is a signal to others that they should fight to the last for what they believe in.
