SIR – Re the cost of police boss (Letters, March 19). I am pleased to see that I am not alone in my concerns regarding our recently appointed police commissioner, Mark Burns-Williamson. He has only held the post since November 2012, and needs assistance already.

I understand that there are approximately 40 commissioners throughout the land; – will they now climb on this lucrative money tree and appoint their own deputies?

How many full-time police officers could we appoint instead of these desk-bound people who probably have no idea about policing.

Most concerning is the fact that our commissioner is a member of a political party; police, the commissioner, and any deputies should be totally independent.
