SIR – I am sorry, Joe McHugh, but what you had to say (Letters, February 21) really was a nonsense.

In your letter about supermarkets in Shipley you wrote that “the more the merrier can only be good thing for shoppers everywhere.” Really?

If the supermarkets have their way, then they will totally take over every city, town and village centre throughout the country, thereby destroying many independent local businesses in the process.

The march of the supermarkets, either through large stores or the more recent convenience stores, really does have to be stopped before our various centres as we know them no longer exist. We will all be very much the poorer if this is allowed to happen.
