SIR – Though the result at Wembley was disappointing, it was an absolute honour to be at the stadium on the very day we remembered Bobby Moore OBE – our only World Cup-winning skipper. It is hard to believe he lost his life to prostate cancer 20 years ago.
To see Bobby’s statue for the first time was wonderful and also so emotional. I had intended to bring some flowers but expected many others would have done so. I was surprised only a solitary West Ham United scarf was laid there.
The following day I put together my own humble tribute in Centenary Square. At first I got some strange looks, but when I explained why I was there, they were brilliant about it.
To the 56, and our Captain of ‘66... together, forever.
John Murphy, Cooper Lane, Bradford
