SIR – Twenty-year-old Matthew Hemingway from Allerton has qualified as a plumber and electrician, yet despite applying for jobs and attending interviews, firms turn him down because they say he is “over-qualified” (T&A, February 23).
Rubbish, they want him to start again from the bottom so the Government will fund him. Matthew, who has studied for four years and gained City & Guilds qualifications in both trades, has ended up working at McDonald’s earning about £160 a fortnight.
No wonder his dad says he has wasted all those years and is on a downer.
What kind of message does this send out to other students with aspirations?
There are a lot of employers who should hang their heads in shame.
