SIR – I am surprised that Philip Bird (Letters, February 22) doesn’t recognise my oft-stated views on nuclear power – it’s necessary, in the short term, to help us reduce the CO2 emitted by fossil fuel power stations. The newer fourth-generation technologies have much to commend them.
However, he should be careful about what he reads as there is compelling evidence that the atmosphere and oceans have continued to warm over the last decade, and that wind generation worldwide receives less subsidy than coal, oil and gas.
It’s a blessing that neither of us is likely to be around in 30 years time to suffer the results of the policies that he supports.
