SIR – However bad the recent revelations have been about our food industry, one of the main issues to resolve must surely be the distances some of our food travels either in its raw or finished state.

As a keen walker, it is apparent from the number of cattle and sheep we see in the Dales that we have an abundance of food in this country which is no doubt of a much better quality than the vast majority of what we import.

Transporting animals and food hundreds or even thousands of miles is an environmental disaster and puts unnecessary stress on the animals.

Last but not least, it would give much needed support to our farmers, growers and local shops.
