SIR – Re the possible closure of Sugden End recycling centre.

Homes in my area have very restricted recycling facilities compared to the rest of Bradford and Keighley. We need the centre.

This is before we even start on large amounts of garden refuse and cardboard packaging (which is not allowed kerbside). To expect us to fill cars, drive down Halifax Road and across Keighley to Ings Road is ridiculous.

Coun Thornton obviously doesn’t get up to the Upper Worth Valley much. He says “most homes will remain within a 15-minute drive of a centre and virtually all with a 20 minute drive.” At a ‘quiet’ time of day, 20 minutes is stupidly optimistic!

The Keighley Recycling Centre is too far and dangerous to get to with a car stuffed with bin liners, trees, and broken furniture. I have trouble believing that it’s under-used!

Every weekend and summer afternoons you have to queue and people come from far and wide because it’s a ‘much better place to get to’.

It just doesn’t make sense – Coun Poulsen is right when she says many people will just fly tip it anywhere.

The irony could be amusing: people carefully collecting all they can recycle to help save the planet, then pumping tons of CO2 into the atmosphere as they crawl through Keighley town centre with branches in their car to take it for disposal.

Come on, Bradford Council, keep Sugden End open!
