SIR - As your coverage made clear (T&A, November 8), the Bradford Peace Trail is an important initiative which underlines the range and depth of social and political innovation owed to this district, in areas of education, public health, women's and children's rights, international relations, conflict resolution and popular representation.

This is an historical record of which we can all be proud, but it is not just a matter of recalling the past, because there is a legacy here on which we can build for the future.

The authors of the Peace Trail brochure point out a number of cases where commemorative plaques are in poor repair, sometimes with their messages obscured, or in which significant people or events find no public recognition.

I wonder if the Council's heritage department could take this information as a guide in restoring the existing memorials to their former glory, and creating new memorials that increase the public visibility of our common history?
