SIR - I could not believe the comments of Sir Menzies Campbell, right, on Question Time regarding education.

He defended the comprehensive system, saying that it was much better than the previous system which decided, at 11 years of age, whether you went on to play football or cricket. What codswallop!

I was educated at what would now be termed an inner city school - Green Lane in Manningham - and then across the road at Belle Vue.

Many of my mates from Green Lane went on to Drummond Road and we continued to play football and cricket. Perhaps Sir Menzies does not realise these two sports are seasonal and had nothing whatsoever to do with education.
