SIR – As 2013 begins, I’m looking forward to the challenges ahead. Many of you will join me in looking forward to signs of economic recovery.

The UK situation is tough, but we are heavily affected by what is happening around us, and our European neighbours are also finding it hard to solve their monetary and economic problems.

The world is undergoing change and resolute action is needed to tackle terrorism and the challenges of new democracy, especially in the Middle East. All these things will have knock-on effects for our country and our region.

I will continue to fight for Yorkshire in the EU: for businesses which want to thrive, for families who want to get on and for the individual aspirations of all those who want to improve their lot.

As always, I will continue to make sure the EU does less, but does it better. I’ll strive to make sure that Yorkshire’s voice is heard on issues such as fishing and farming, rural broadband, regional funding, and animal welfare.

Yorkshire offers so much to its residents and visitors. We must continue to create the conditions for the high quality of life we all deserve.
