SIR – Coun Miller is quite wrong to say that the Council did not have a plan for the collection of waste over the holiday period (Letters, January 3).

Christmas and New Year refuse collection is an issue which we consider carefully. Arrangements vary from year to year depending on which day of the week the holidays fall.

As the Christmas Day and New Year’s Day bank holiday always falls on the same day of consecutive weeks, we collect on alternative days when necessary and go to a lot of trouble to advertise those changes.

This year, approximately half the households in the district were affected by collection changes and only a small number of complaints have been received.

Refuse collections due on Christmas Day were collected a few days early on December 22, and those due on Boxing Day were collected on December 29. The collection due on New Year’s Day was to be collected on Saturday.

Households affected by these changes were notified via a tag which was attached to the handle of every bin which was left out for collection on Tuesday and Wednesday in the week before Christmas. Information about the changes was also available on the Bradford Council website.
